“…O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave,” is a commonly known part of the U.S national anthem. During this song people can’t help but to feel pride in our country and all it has been through to be safe and free. Freedom is something everyone wants for themselves and sometimes you need to be free to feel safe. Yes the average man wants to feel safe but he also wants freedom.
Back in the 1700’s, when our country was still young, our people wanted nothing more then to be free from British rule. A spark of pride was ignited and the revolutionary war was born. The brave people who lived on this land fought for our freedom so they could feel safe. Safe to live their life without being in a state of constant fear. A sense of pride was born in the 1700’s and continued into the 1860’s.
The country we know today was falling apart. North vs. south, state vs. state, person vs. person. The civil war rampaged through our decaying nation acting like a healing remedy making our country become one again. Lifting up spirits and hopes. The civil war was bloody but in the end it helped our nation come together as one and let our citizens free and safe. All they wanted was freedom. Our pride in our nation started to rebuild until one faithful day.
September 11, 2001 a day no one will forget. A day where our nation was shaken at its core. A day that could have collapsed our foundation, but instead made it stronger. As many Americans watched in horror as two airplanes crashed into the twin towers making them crumble down to the streets of New York City an overwhelming and powerful sense of pride was lit. As our fire grew bigger so did our want and need for a new sense of freedom and safety.
War was declared on Iraq to show them that the U.S will never fall silent, that we will never back down, and that we will never give up. After 9/11 our nation’s sense of pride was up, our sense of safety shaken, and our sense of freedom diminished. Now its 2012, the war just ending. Our sense of safety and freedom back up. Our want for others to be free is enormous.
Through out our countries history our people wanted freedom; our people wanted safety. The revolutionary war, civil war, 9/11, and the Iraq war prove what our national anthem is all about. “… O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave.” Our freedom helps to create a sense of safety. So yes people want to feel safe but people also want to be free.
